Matthew Quayle, Composer-Pianist: Miniatures and Meditations

November 4, 2023
7:30–9:15 PM ET

Olin C. Robison Concert Hall (Mahaney Arts Center at Middlebury College)
72 Porter Field Road
Middlebury, VT 05753

Composer-Pianist Matthew Quayle (Visiting Assistant Professor in Music, Middlebury College) will present an eclectic recital of original solo piano music. Quayle will begin by exploring the art of the musical miniature. What can be said in just a minute or two of music? How can small forms be juxtaposed to tell a larger story? The program will include Quayle’s playful Baroque-inflected suite Antiques and his elegiac Memorial Suite. These collections of short works veer from the comedic to the tragic and back, combining lyrical expression with virtuosic explosivity. In contrast, the second half of the recital will explore a more expansive and patient approach to musical narrative: the piano sonata. Quayle will begin with Sonata No. 4, a meditative piece that barely rises above a whisper. He will then present the world premiere of Sonata No. 5, a work whose introspection often overflows with jazzy exuberance.

Matthew Quayle: Complete Piano Sonatas
An evening of contemporary piano music by Matthew Quayle.

In this recital, composer-pianist Matthew Quayle presents his complete series of original piano sonatas. Written over a span of 25 years, these powerful works explore a wide range of styles and emotions. After the brooding grief of the first sonata, the protest and violence of the second, and the bluesy ebullience of the third, Quayle will perform the world premiere of his meditative Sonata No. 4.

INSIDE THE SCORE: A NEW CELLO CONCERTO | JAMESON PLATTE, MATTHEW QUAYLE

Join the Allentown Symphony Orchestra and Diane Wittry, Music Director and Conductor for a unique “behind-the-scenes” event.  Inside the Score: A New Cello Concerto takes the audience on a journey from the composer’s vision -- to rehearsal -- to live performance.

During the first portion of Inside the Score, Diane Wittry, joined by composer Matthew Quayle, discuss the orchestra’s rehearsal of this new piece featuring ASO Assistant Principal Cello, Jameson Platte.  Then the ASO will premiere the first live performance of this up-and-coming American composer’s work – a rare opportunity so see, hear and understand how the music goes from a composer’s inspiration to the concert hall.

Proceeds from sales to benefit ASO Education and Community Engagement programs, including El Sistema Lehigh Valley.
