Piano Sonata No. 2 (1998)

in three movements

Duration: 12’

Premiered by Matthew Quayle at Oberlin Conservatory, December 1998.

Sonata No. 2 uses a variety of effects with the sostenuto (middle) pedal. At various points the pianist strums or stops the strings inside the piano, and plays chords with the entire arm.

This dark composition was shaped throughout by the recent news about the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard.
