Sun Dance (2005)
for two alto saxophones and piano
Commissioned by Gail Levinsky. Recorded May 31, 2006 at UNC Greensboro for Levinsky's CD Tipping Point, with Levinsky and Susan Fancher, saxophones, and Inara Zandmane, piano. Live premiere at the Penn State Convention of the North American Saxophone Alliance, January 2007, by Levinsky, Fancher, and Matthew Quayle.
Sun Dance is an eight-minute fantasia for two alto saxophones and piano. The mood is primarily light and exuberant, drawing from jazz, blues and minimalist styles. The two saxophones are often paired and interlocked to create a "super-saxophone". Key clicks are used in the central section to simulate a spontaneous improvisation of drums or clapping.
